acclaimed creative director and music maker trevor jackson releases format, a collection of unreleased music & his first album in 14 years.
jackson is a man whose fingerprints are all over underground and mainstream culture, not only as a dj, producer and label impresario, but also as a designer, artist, filmmaker and curator who has featured in exhibitions at the ica, barbican and guggenheim.
format is no ordinary album release - instead it charts the legacy of the physical music format, in a characteristically beautiful and uncompromising way, paying homage to physically released formats over the decades and also celebrating the artistry, design, as well as the individual experience of playing music via physical methods.
for the limited-edition release each of the 12 tracks will be presented on a different format designed by jackson and produced by the vinyl factory. including 12", 10" and 7" vinyl, cd, mini cd, cassette, usb, vhs, mini disc, dat, 8-track and reel-to-reel. all items will be available individually except the reel-to-reel only available in a special edition of the entire set.
says jackson: "every copy of a physical recording is different, a real object that has its own little story - a one of a kind, personalised by the effort you put in to purchase it, each time you touch it, and the unique ritual that goes along with playing it. this music is the result oF many years of experimentation and evolution, created by physical machines, fed through objects with personality steeped in history. the fact culturally everything's become so convenient and easily accessible whilst in the process totally disposable is an important subject i needed to address with this project."
jackson, over the years, has built up an archive of over 150 unreleased tracks. for format he has carefully selected, re-edited and remastered tracks from various points through the last 15-year period to create a new body of work. touching on synth and beatbox workouts, proto-house, new wave, on italo and techno, on ambient and psychedelia, the tracks are, the same time, none of these things.
an accompanying exhibition will take place at the vinyl factory in soho, offering people the first chance to listen to the album in full, see and purchase the limited edition formats and also experience a new audio-visual artwork by jackson.
trevor jackson has been working at the forefront of audio and visual culture for over 20 years. the london based art director, designer, moving-image maker and producer's work has been exhibited at the ica, baltic, guggenheim and barbican, as well as on countless, seminal record covers. with its emphasis on visual as much as musical artistry and innovation, jackson's iconic output recordings label (1996-2006) set a new aesthetic standard prompting critics to declare it that decades equivalent to the legendary factory records.
jacksons career began in 1987 when he formed design company bite it! jackson subsequently ventured into record production and remixing: working as the underdog, his dark blend of hip-hop, psychedelia, avant-garde electronics and dub won him many admirers, and remix work for massive attack, u2 and unkle followed. in 1996 he retired the underdog alias and formed a new label, output recordings. jacksons art direction gave output its unique and immediate visual identity, one intimately and inextricably linked to the groundbreaking records it released and distributed music by four tet, lcd soundsystem, the rapture, and jacksons own playgroup project, among others.
his visual campaign for the band soulwax received several prestigious awards, including the tokyo tdc non members prize, a d&ad silver pencil nomination and creative reviews best in book. jacksons work has featured in the guggenheim museums exhibition on minimalism, singular forms (sometimes repeated): art from 1951 to the present. a sound and light installation for the launch of the bmw 1-series car saw jackson combine his audio and visual interests to much acclaim, leading to his debut a/v live performance for the 2005 onedotzero festival in tokyo. in 2007, jackson showed work at gatesheads baltic, as part of the dazed vs warhol exhibition, and created a real-time live a/v performance entitled rgbpm, which premiered at the london imax cinema as part of the optronica festival.
in 2011 jackson had his first solo show nowhere at the kk gallery in london, these video, photographic & screen printed works explored the innocence of natural light and colour, as well as the power of opposing astrological forces. in early 2014 a show featuring magnified microscopic images of vinyl grooves yesterday, today, tomorrow, forever was presented at the 12mail gallery in paris along with a large-scale installation performance space palindrome at the ica in london as part of their richard hamilton retrospective.
jackson remains an in-demand producer, sound designer, remixer and dj, and has worked with the likes of dinos chapman, soft cell and the gossip, his classic mix for the renowned compilation series dj kicks (k7! 2003) and both his acclaimed metal dance compilations (strut 2012/13), are much like his own approach to creating music: an uncompromising blend of diverse sounds that traverse the sonic spectrum. with a forward-thinking approach driven by an enduring commitment to promote innovation and new talent, as well as extensive knowledge and respect for music history and its cultural roots, jacksons current regular show on east londons nts radio keep him as relevant today as he was when he first started over two decades ago.
